POTENTIAL TRIP LEADER REQUIREMENTS
Requirements Potential
Trip Leaders need to fulfill to complete the Trip Leader Mentor Program
Prerequisites:
Before any mentored excursions take place, a Potential Trip Leader must...

attend and successfully
complete the leadership training course at one of the NH Chapterís annual
spring/winter workshops, with good recommendations from their instructors.
- inform the Excursions Committee Chair of the Potential Trip Leaderís
intent to enter the Mentoring Program and provide contact information
(name, phone, address, email).
- have participated in at least 5 officially published AMC-NH Chapter
hikes, each with a different Trip Leader. A list of hikes, including
dates, destinations, and Leaders must be submitted to the NH Chapter
Excursions Committee Chair for verification.
Mentored Excursions:
A Potential Trip Leader must co-lead a minimum of 3 official NH Chapter
excursions. Each excursion must be done with an approved Trip Leader of
the NH Chapter Excursions Committee acting as a Mentor.
The Mentor
will evaluate the Potential Trip Leader on each excursion as per the
criteria listed below. Progress and performance shall be recorded on
the Mentor Evaluation Form.
- A Potential Trip Leader must have a different Mentor for each mentored
excursion. Mentors can be any approved NH Excursions Committee Trip
Leader that is qualified to lead excursions of the type being done.
- Each excursion must be published in the AMC Outdoors magazine with
the Potential Trip Leaderís name and phone number be published in all
trip notices submitted.
- A Potential Trip Leader's first mentored trip must be scheduled for
a date within 3 years of successfully completing the NH Chapter Leadership
Training Course. Failure to do so will require the Potential Trip Leader
to complete the NH Chapter Leadership Training Course again. (This requirement
does not apply to existing Leaders who are pursuing a higher leadership
class).
- A Potential Trip Leader must complete the Mentor Program's minimum
required hikes, and submit their Mentor Evaluation Form to the Trip
Leader Board of Acceptance, within 2 years of the date of their first
scheduled mentored hike. The Mentor program must be totally completed
to the satisfaction of the Board of Acceptance within 4 years of the
date of their first scheduled mentored hike. Failure to do so will require
the Potential Trip Leader to complete the NH Chapter Leadership Training
Course and Mentor Program again.
A Potential
Trip Leader's first 3 mentored hikes will be conducted as follows:
First Excursion:
The
Potential Trip Leader will participate in screening participants by telephone
prior to the hike. While on the hike, he/she will observe the Mentor on
how he/she conducts the hike and discuss leadership technique.
Second Excursion: The Potential Trip Leader will take a more
active part in the trip. In addition to screening participants, he/she
will perform such tasks as introductions at the trailhead, setting the
pace, determining group breaks, setting a turn around time, and other
items as determined by the Mentor.
Third Excursion: The Potential Trip Leader will take full control
of the trip. He/She will perform all duties such as preparing and submitting
the trip notice, screening participants, checking for proper equipment
at the trailhead, setting the pace of the hike, observing participants
and watching for signs of problems, food and water breaks, trail etiquette,
group dynamics, and safety of the group. Only contact information for
Potential Trip Leader will be listed in the published trip notice. Mentors
will not list their telephone number in a trip notice of a Potential Trip
Leaderís third excursion. Mentors will list their names only.
Additional
Requirements for Potential Class 1 Trip Leaders:
- A Potential
Class 1 Trip Leader must complete all Mentored Excursions in the calendar
winter season.
- At least
1 of the 3 Mentored Excursions must be to a destination at or above
4000 feet above sea level.
Additional
Requirements for Potential Class 2 Trip Leaders:
- A Potential
Class 2 Trip Leader must complete all Mentored Excursions in the calendar
spring, summer, or fall seasons. Additionally, excursions cannot go
where winter conditions are likely to be encountered.
- If the Potential
Class 2 Trip Leaders is not a current Class 3 Trip Leader, at least
1 of the 3 Mentored Excursions must be to a destination at or above
4000 feet above sea level.
If the Potential
Class 2 Trip Leader is a current Class 3 Trip Leader, 1 additional Mentored
Excursion must be completed to a destination at or above 4000 feet above
sea level. This Mentored hike will be conducted as described in the Third
Excursion of the regular mentoring program.
Additional
Requirements for Potential Class 3 Trip Leaders
- A Potential
Class 3 Trip Leader must complete all Mentored Excursions on or between
May 1 and Oct. 31.
